“A schoole of wickednesse.”

William Prynne was not a fan of the theatre.

In his enormous 1633 anti-theatrical polemic Histriomastix, the English Puritan writer attacked stage plays and the people who made and watched them with an enthusiasm that would make even the most committed one-star reviewer seem restrained.

Among his complaints was the wonderfully economical description of the theatre as “a schoole of wickednesse.”

Nearly four centuries later, we thought the theatre deserved to reclaim it.

THE FRONT
Prynne’s wonderfully economical condemnation of the stage: “A schoole of wickednesse.”

THE BACK
The theatre gets the last word: “The Theatre Replies — AKA Advanced Meisner Technique.”

Because if Prynne thought seventeenth-century actors were wicked, we'd really like to hear his thoughts about repetition exercises.

This vintage-inspired theatre history tee turns Prynne’s condemnation into something closer to a badge of honor...
